Questions, answered

When should I go to the hospital?

Many providers use the 5-1-1 rule for a first baby: contractions about 5 minutes apart, lasting about 1 minute, for 1 hour. Follow your own provider's advice, and go in straight away if your waters break, you are bleeding or your baby is moving less.

How do I tell Braxton Hicks from real contractions?

Braxton Hicks are irregular and ease with rest. Real contractions get stronger, longer and closer together. Read our guide to Braxton Hicks vs real contractions.

Is there a free version I can try?

Yes, our free online contraction timer works in any browser.
